After deliberating on Tenet’s core ideas during more than a decade, Nolan took more than five years to compose the script. In late 2018, pre-production began, casting in March 2019 and the main photography lasted three months, from May until November, in Denmark, Estonia, India, Italy, Norway, Great Britain and the USA. Hoyte van Hoytema, the cinematographer, shot 70 mm with IMAX. Scenes have been shot both back and forth of time manipulation. There have been more than 100 boats and thousands of extras.
Tenet was released in United Kingdom by 26 August 2020 and on 3 September 2020 in the United States, in IMAX, 35 mm and 70 mm, three times delayed because of a COVID-19 pandemic. After the pandemic shutdown, it was the first Hollywood tentpole to be opened in theaters and was the fourth highest gross film in the year 2020. It’s worth 361 million dollars worldwide. But even its expensive manufacturing and marketing budget did not break down, losing dealer Warner Bros. Images up to 100 million dollars. In general, the critics gave positive reviews that praised graphics, production and casting, but criticized the difficulty of the sound mixing and story.
An undercover operation at a Kiev opera house is carried out by a CIA agent, the “Protagonist” A masked soldier who “un-fires” a bullet from a hostile gunman saves his lives. He has a distinctive trinket. The protagonist is kidnapped by mercenaries after seizing an artifact. Before using cyanide, he endures torture. He wakes up to discover that cyanide was a test of his allegiance; his team has died and the object has been lost.
The character joins Tenet, a secret organisation. A scientist shows him “inverted” entropy bullets which permit them to reverse the time. She feels she is created in the future, and there is a weapon that can wash the past out. The protagonist tracks the ballots to arms dealer Priya Singh, with the help of a local contact Neil. He figured out that she was a Tenet member; the Russian oligarch Andrei Sator had purchased and inverted her cartridges.
The character approaches the stranged wife of Sator Kat, an art evaluator who unknowingly sold a forged Goya drawing to Sator. Sator uses the drawing and manages her to blackmail her. The protagonist builds a free port facility at Oslo Airport to rob the drawing with Neil. They find a “turnstile” machine, and they break two men with masks. Priya explains that the turnstile can invert object and people’s entropy, and the masked men are the same individual.
Kat introduces the character to Sator on the Amalfi coast, but discovers that the drawing is intact. The three go boating and Kat tries to drown Sator, but he is rescued by the protagonist. The protagonist offers Sator to help him to locate a case containing Plutonium-241. In Tallinn, the protagonist and the Neil ambush an armed convoy, containing the artifact lost in Kiev, and steal the case. The Sator, who takes Kat as a hostage, is entangled. The character gives a vacuum case to Sator and retires.
The inverted Sator shoots Kat with an inverted round, while the normal Sator requires the location of the gun. The protagonist is saved by Tenet operatives headed by Ives as Sator escapes. The group takes Kat through the turnstile of Sator to reverse its impact. The character goes back to the location of the ambush and chases Sator. His car is turned over and Sator shoots it; Ives’ squad again saves the protagonist. Neil indicates that he’s a Tenet member.
The protagonist and Neil return to the free port of Oslo in time. The protagonist deals with his history and reaches the turnstile, followed by Neil and Kat. Priya states that the devices are part of a “algorithm” that Sator assembles, which can disastrously reverse entropy.
Sator died of pancreatic cancer, Kat reveals. With the turn of a dead man he activates the algorithm, hoping the world will perish with him. During their holidays when they were happy together last, Kat believes Sator would kill himself. The main character, Neil, Kat, and the Tenet powers are reversing until the next day to allow Kat to postpone the death of Sator while Tenet ensures the algorithm.
Tenet leads the algorithm in northern Siberia to Sator’s home town of Stalsk-12. The red team troops move forward on a “temporal pincer movement” and the black team troops move backward. A masked corpse of a blue team soldier with a trinket in his sacking is helped by the Protagonist and Ives after he sees him die on the other side. Kat boards the Yacht of Sator in Vietnam, kills it and secures the Algorithm for him as a Protagonist and Ives.
The protagonist, Neil, and Ives interrupt and disassemble the algorithm. The character observes the trinket on the rucksack of Neil. Neil indicates that the protagonist had already hired him, and that is the end of a long relationship. Priya tries that Kat is murdered, but the protagonist is murdered, who realized that he is the future master of Tenet.
